Raised Garden Bed

Are you wanting to build a raised garden bed to grow vegatables or flowers? If you have any unsightly stumps in your yard you could use this opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. There are many different ways and styles that you can build them and, while this is a more expensive option, it definitely lends a feeling of rigidity and longevity to the yard and it will last a really long time. See how we did that below. . .

Project Description:

We built this raised garden bed to solve the problem of 2 very large stumps in a yard. In lieu of bringing in a stump grinding company, and then still having to deal with two very large holes and then still seeding, we opted to build this instead.

They can be used for either flowers or vegetables because the treated wood has been established to be safe for use in vegetable garden beds.

Project Details:
  • Box Frame Lumber: 4″ x 6″ Pressure Treated (Ground Contact) timbers. The rows of timbers were anchored together with large 10″ log screws.
  • Bed Cap and Bench: 2″ x 6″ Dry Deck Lumber (non-incised)
  • Soil: I used a garden soil mix that had a mix of topsoil, peat moss and a some compost. This works very good in raised beds. You can also add some perlite in for added drainage but the peat moss does a pretty good job of that while still retaining the moisture.
